Xcel Awards SWAGƵ for Conservation Efforts

Xcel Energy recognized SWAGƵ's conservation efforts.

April 4, 2019

The University of Northern Colorado was recognized by Xcel Energy for saving the most energy in the state using a self-directed program.

In 2018, SWAGƵ saved 3.1 million kWh, which equates to enough energy to power about 281 homes annually. Over that time, SWAGƵ also saved 1,794 metric tons of carbon-dioxide emissions, or the equivalent of removing about 378 cars from roads in a year.

SWAGƵ's commitment to sustainability includes a program started three years ago as part of an initiative to implement energy-saving measures and raise awareness through a campus-wide education program. The efforts have resulted in over $1.5 million in energy cost savings since the program's inception. Since then, SWAGƵ has reduced energy consumption by 27% including an 18% decrease of electricity use, 29% decrease of natural gas use and 12% decrease of water use.

An upcoming project funded by a state grant will allow SWAGƵ to install solar panels on Parsons Hall and further reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

Since 2004, SWAGƵ has implemented numerous energy and water conservation projects including lighting and equipment upgrades, building and irrigation controls, low‐flow technologies, recycling, composting, green cleaning, xeriscaping, and IT power and printing management. SWAGƵ is also a designated “Tree Campus U.S.A” and “Bicycle Friendly University.”
