SWAGƵ Students have grown accustomed to the sounds of construction ringing throughout campus, but lately, a new area of campus has been ridden with the sound of drills and trucks.
The hill next to the University Center will be home to a new community garden once construction finishes. While only in its early stages, the project aims to add a new space for both students and Greeley locals to share. The student-run organization L.E.A.F. has had a major role in seeing this project come to light.
“We were shown the plans right after they finished them and got the drawings up from the city of Greeley and all of that,” said Long-term L.E.A.F. member Lorayne Aguinaldo. “And they showed us a couple different plans and we helped them choose it, like what the landscaping would look like, kind of how their tiers of native plants would look, what recreational areas might look like.”
“The corner of the street over there, there’s going to be a path connecting. It’s going to open up the university space more toward the city of Greeley. It might strengthen our relationship and it’s definitely going to be a better visual on this side. The native grasses are a really nice backdrop especially because they are so diverse, and it will be really nice to see the community come out and enjoy this space as much as we do.” Said Aguinaldo.
While excitement for the new addition to SWAGƵ campus may be growing, it will be a while before construction finishes.
“They are projected to be done with the initial landscaping and all that by summer or fall this year. But as for the plants, the timeline is a little more ambiguous because they’re kind of just going to be put in, and they’re just going to see how they grow. Native plants, and all plants, take time to grow so I believe that that date is sometime in 2027, but some of the rec stuff and pathways will be open earlier.” Aguinaldo said.
Students walking from central campus to the university center will be able to see the construction, as it will be continuing throughout the remainder of the semester.
